"Since first turning to the medium of oil paint Jem has concentrated predominately on the figurative, depicting images of movement, intrigued by the inherent contradictions involved in evoking such images through a static medium. Whilst this remains an area of deep interest for him he has recently found himself also producing what might best be described as ‘imagined landscapes’. These pieces have, a playful quality. They frequently teeter on the edge of abstraction, sometimes they topple over that edge.

Almost all of his paintings in this area are palimpsests. In fact it seems integral to their ‘finished’ condition that this is the case, the previous images impacting on the final painting: fragments of a previous existence that inform the latest façade, textural reminders that scar the skin; cicatrices that mark long concealed events."
